Chief of EMS

Pulaski County Public Safety is seeking to fill a full-time Chief of EMS position. The Chief of EMS will provide strategic, financial, and operational leadership for all EMS-related activities in the department, including prehospital care, policy development, mass casualty preparedness, personnel development, and education, while ensuring compliance with state and national standards. The successful candidate will be an accomplished paramedic leader committed to clinical excellence, innovation in EMS service delivery, and the overall organizational management of Pulaski County Public Safety. This position supervises all Public Safety (EMS) departmental staff, manages agency operations, and reports to the County Administrator (or designee).

Important Note: Employment will commence at the full salary; however, the title of Chief will not be conferred until a full transition period with the current Chief has been completed.

Work hours are primarily weekdays but occasionally include nights, weekends, holidays, and special events. Some overnight travel may be required. The salary scale for this position is $90,000–$119,959 and is commensurate with education and experience.

Educational Requirements: The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree or extensive comparable experience, along with Virginia EMS paramedic certification, EVOC, and a suitable driving record. They must hold ICS certifications (100, 200, 300, 700, 800) and have prior experience as a Virginia Education Coordinator and EMS instructor certifications. Ten years of EMS and supervisory experience is required. Extensive grant management experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office are also essential. The candidate should demonstrate strong problem-solving, leadership, communication, and teamwork skills, with comprehensive knowledge of EMS agency management—including budgeting, fleet management, radio systems, training, billing, risk assessment, procurement, and strategic planning. Evidence of progressive leadership roles, personnel management expertise, and completion of leadership training is essential. They must exercise sound judgment in emergencies and possess executive-level knowledge of laws and regulations governing EMS operations, policies, billing, medical records, and financial practices.

Special Requirements: The candidate will participate in Pulaski County Leadership Team meetings and training sessions, serve on various local and regional committees and boards such as the Emergency Planning Committee, E-911 Board, WVEMS Council, and Paramedic Program Advisory Board, and actively oversee departmental continuity of operations and succession planning.

Building Inspector

The Pulaski County Building Department is seeking to fill a full-time Building Inspector position. This position involves performing technical inspections during site preparation and construction to ensure compliance with building, plumbing, and electrical codes, as well as zoning ordinances. The successful candidate will engage with architects, engineers, and citizens, providing guidance on construction plans and addressing complaints while maintaining accurate records and reports. This position reports to the Building Official.

Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some evening and weekend work may be required. The salary scale for this position is $42,092 to $87,527 and is commensurate with education and experience.

Educational Requirements: Applicants must possess a high school diploma (or equivalent), supplemented by training in building and construction plan reading, architectural technology, or engineering technology. A minimum of three years of experience in construction, maintenance, public works, or code enforcement is required, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office and permitting software. Sanitation Worker

The Pulaski County Public Service Authority Department is seeking to fill a full-time Sanitation Worker position. This position performs routine unskilled work in the collection of solid waste that includes prolonged walking/riding routes, lifting and pulling containers, working outdoors in extreme weather conditions including heat and cold and repetitive physical exertion. This position reports to the Sanitation Supervisor.

Work hours are 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., hours may vary to include weekends, nights and holidays. The salary scale for this position is $34,877 - $52,677 and is commensurate upon education and experience.

Sanitation Driver Part-Time

Pulaski County PSA is seeking a reliable, safety-minded individual for a part-time Sanitation Driver position. Responsibilities include operating sanitation vehicles, collecting and transporting solid waste, recyclables, yard waste, and bulk materials; performing vehicle inspections; maintaining equipment; and following all safety and sanitation procedures. This position reports to the Sanitation Supervisor and performs related public works duties as assigned.

Applicants must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), a safe driving record, and the ability to perform physical work outdoors in varying conditions. Experience operating heavy equipment or working in sanitation/public works is preferred.

Work hours are 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., hours will vary including weekends, nights and holidays. Hours shall not exceed 29 hours per week. The hourly range for this position is $19.31 – $28.69 and is commensurate upon education and experience.

Educational Requirements: A high school diploma or GED is preferred, but any combination of education and experience demonstrating the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered. Prior experience in solid waste collection, public works, construction, landscaping, heavy labor, or related fields is preferred but not required. Additionally, experience in operating automotive equipment is desirable.

Courtroom Security Officer

Due to pending retirements, the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department is now hiring for the position of Courtroom Security Officer. This position maintains order and security within court facilities and courtrooms. This includes patrolling the building, controlling public access, screening individuals, and providing security for court proceedings, including jurors and defendants. They also assist with serving legal documents, transporting prisoners, and making arrests when necessary. Preference will be given to applicants with current jail or law enforcement certification. This position reports to the Sergeant.

Work hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Some evening and weekend work required as well as travel due to extraditions. The salary scale for this position is $49,500 - $62,500 and is commensurate upon education and experience.

Deputy Sheriff

Due to pending retirements, the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department is currently hiring for a Deputy Sheriff position. Applicants should possess Virginia State Law Enforcement Certification (or be willing to attend the academy in July 2026 for non-certified LEO applicants) and have a minimum of two years of college credits. Preference will be given to applicants who reside in Pulaski County. This position reports to the Sergeant.

Weekday, weekend, evening and some holiday work is required.

The anticipated salary for non-certified applicants is $51,500 based upon successful completion of the NRV Criminal Justice Training Academy and field training. Tenured LEO’s would receive additional pay based upon experience and years of service ranging from $52,000 - $61,900.

Youth Services Assistant

Pulaski County Library is seeking to fill a part-time Youth Services Assistant position. This role provides library services to preschoolers, school-aged children, and young adults through the planning and delivery of early literacy programs, story times, youth activities, and the Summer Reading Program. Working closely with the Youth Services Librarian, the position assists in developing and implementing programs that promote reading and literacy among children, teens, parents, caregivers, and educators. Responsibilities include maintaining program records, assisting with collection management, providing circulation, reference, and technology support to patrons, supporting community outreach and program promotion efforts, and performing related customer service and administrative duties to ensure smooth library operations. This position may also supervise volunteers and reports to the Youth Services Coordinator.

Work hours are approximately 25 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Some evening work may be required. The hourly rate for this position ranges from $16 to $21, commensurate with education and experience.

Wastewater Service Technician

Pulaski County PSA Water/Wastewater Department is seeking to fill a full-time Wastewater Service Technician position. This role involves maintaining and repairing water and sewer collection systems to ensure safe and reliable utility service. Duties include installing, inspecting, and repairing water and sewer lines, mains, manholes, hydrants, valves, meters, equipment, and related infrastructure; monitoring sewer flows; testing flow rates and line pressure; responding to emergency utility situations such as water breaks, blocked sewer lines, and high water alarms while performing on-call duties; and operating power tools, various lawn equipment, vehicles, and maintenance equipment. The position also requires performing physical labor outdoors in varying terrain while adhering to all safety and regulatory requirements. Successful candidates must demonstrate regular attendance, timely emergency response, effective communication, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. This position reports to the Utility Maintenance Supervisor.

Work hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with some holiday, weekend, evening, and emergency work as needed. The salary range is $35,949 to $61,023, commensurate with education and experience.

Educational requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, along with basic math and mechanical aptitude. Preferred candidates will have experience in construction, landscaping, plumbing, public works, or equipment operation, as well as experience in the maintenance, repair, and construction of water and sewer facilities. However, relevant experience may substitute for part of the educational requirement.

E-911 Telecommunicator

Pulaski County Public Safety is seeking to fill full-time E-911 Telecommunicator positions. This role involves handling emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching first responders, operating communication systems, and maintaining records. The position reports to the Public Safety Telecommunicator Shift Supervisor.

Work hours are determined by the shift supervisor. Applicants must be able to work any shift, including shift rotations, weekends, and holidays, and be available to work overtime as needed to meet operational requirements. “On Call” days are also required each month. This is an essential position requiring employees to work during inclement weather and be available for immediate recall during emergencies. The salary range for this position is $42,630 – $68,378, and compensation is commensurate with education and experience.

Assistant Chief of EMS Operations

The Pulaski County Public Safety Department is seeking to fill a full-time Assistant Chief of EMS - Operations (AC 9-1) position. As a key member of the Pulaski County Public Safety Department, the Assistant Chief of EMS plays a critical role in overseeing the daily operations of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department. This position supervises Field Captains, Lieutenants, Field staff manages agency operations and reports to the Chief of EMS.

Work hours are primarily weekdays, but occasionally include nights, weekends, holidays, and Special Events. The starting salary for this position is $80,000+ and is commensurate upon education and experience.

Educational Requirements: The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational and experiential background, including certification as a paramedic by the Virginia Office of EMS and certification in ICS 100, 200, 300, 700, and 800. Current or previous experience as a Virginia Education Coordinator is preferred, as is current or previous instructor certifications in EMS courses. A minimum of an Associate's degree in a related field or extensive comparable experience is required, with a Bachelor's degree preferred. Additionally, a minimum of eight (8) years of supervisory experience is required, with grant writing experience being a desirable asset. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and other applications, is also required.
